Growing in a Positive Direction Towards Health & Fitness Goals By Stephanie Sibbio

We live in a wonderful time where there is a big trend in loving ourselves as we are, no matter what shape or size.  This is a beautiful movement, and makes me feel a little more at ease when it comes to raising a daughter in this world! However, the lines get a little fuzzy between self-love and acceptance; and having health, fitness, and body composition goals. These things can, at first glance, seem like opposites.  It begs the question…

Can we have goals to make changes to the way that we look AND love or accept ourselves for the way we are currently?

Here’s the thing…

What we need to understand when it comes to weight loss or any other body-specific goals is that happiness and self-love do not lie on the other side of those goals.  Furthermore, it’s important that we realize that working towards positive health changes IS a form of self love.

If the actions you take to lose weight, for example, are perceived as self-punishment, then it’s a good time to step back and re-assess your action plan.  In more practical terms, if you are eating salad and working out 5 days a week and HATING IT, then you will never achieve your goals, or self love for that matter.

We are all individuals with unique bodies, goals, schedules, situations and lives!

Here’s what to do instead:

  1. Check in with yourself on a daily basis to figure out what foods and movement types make us feel good, happy, and full of life! At the same time, figure out what foods and movement types don’t feel good in our bodies.
  2. From there, you can make decisions about how to approach your goals from an empowered place, where you are in tune with what makes you feel like you are honouring your body, rather than punishing it.
  3. Test and re-test! Choose a few objective measures to track your progress over time, like a strength measure, photos, or circumference measurements. Repeat these tests every 4-6 weeks to have an objective look at your progress, and see what is working, and what’s not.
  4. Make changes to your habits and routines based on your testing and based on changes in your schedule and life situation at the moment.  Life will always throw curveballs, and it’s important that we ebb and flow with those curveballs, and be kind to ourselves in times when we veer off track.

Learning to approach our goals from a place that honours our lives and bodies is the ultimate goal.  This is something that takes practice, persistence, and mindfulness.

The path to optimal health and fitness is not a linear one.  Working with a coach who can guide you on your path to growing in a positive direction is an investment that will give you the tools to keep growing and adapt towards optimal health.
